Hi there! I am Lauran Hahn, LMHC and I couldn’t more excited to be offering EMDR Intensives at Mindful Living Counseling Orlando!
I started using EMDR Therapy six years ago and I fell in love with it!
I was in awe of the results my clients were getting. We were able to heal years of trauma, pain, and suffering by using EMDR Therapy. As an EMDR Therapist, I was hooked. I wanted to learn more and more. I eventually became a Certified EMDR Therapist, then an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, and then I became an EMDR Facilitator for ConnectEMDR, our local EMDR training center.
Along my journey as an EMDR Therapist, I met other EMDR Therapists that provided EMDR in an intensive format. My therapist-friend-folks shared profound results when offering EMDR in an intensive format, so I decided to give it a try. I found that EMDR Intensives offer the ability to move through months of therapy in just a few days! My clients are able to create resources for managing stressful events and heal years of trauma in an EMDR Intensive!
I believe EMDR in any format is better than no EMDR, but here is what I know about weekly sessions versus an EMDR Intensive. In weekly sessions, life can get in the way. We will have the best of intentions to begin processing a traumatic event, but if you just got into an argument with your partner and it’s stressing you out, it’s difficult to peel back the layers of the trauma onion. The recent argument becomes the priority. In that same vein, if you have a big work commitment in the afternoon, the thought of opening up your trauma before the big meeting seems less than appealing, so again, EMDR gets bumped.
The other limitation with weekly 50-minute sessions is that it takes time to settle into the session before we start processing and it also takes time to close things down and prepare you to leave the session. This really limits the amount of time left for processing to only about 30 minutes a week.
With intensives, we spend about six hours a day together with minimal time lost in transition. With an EMDR Intensive, you’re prepared for the deep dive. You’ve taken time off work, you’ve prepared your family, and you’ve prepared yourself, so you are ready to devote several days to your healing.
Commonly Asked Questions About EMDR Intensives
Have you been referred to EMDR Intensives by another professional? Or has a close friend or relative had profound results with EMDR and is now suggesting that you should try it?
If you’re wondering what in the world is an EMDR Intensive, we are here to answer those questions. There are aspects of EMDR Intensives that are different than regular talk therapy and we want to provide as much information about the process so you can feel comfortable before you even pick up the phone to call.
How is an EMDR Intensive different from weekly therapy?
EMDR Intensives combine multiple sessions over the course of one, two, or three days. Your therapist will be able to guide you into healing more quickly as there is more time for content to come up for you to process. EMDR weekly therapy is a single session lasting 45 minutes, which can limit how much content you can process.
Why is an EMDR Intensive beneficial?
EMDR Intensives are beneficial for those who want to feel a more immediate difference in their day to day. With regular therapy, change accumulates over time, but in the intensive, you can accelerate the immediate transformation.
How does an EMDR Intensive save time?
During weekly EMDR sessions, we are required to transition into the therapy session, do a piece of EMDR Therapy work, and transition out of therapy all within 50 minutes. With an EMDR Intensive, we save hours in transition time by meeting over an extended period during the intensive.
How do I decide if I should do 1, 2, or 3 days of an EMDR intensive?
EMDR Intensives are 100% customizable to meet your needs. You and your therapist will meet for a 45-minute consultation and determine your goals for the EMDR Intensive. Your therapist will recommend the length of the EMDR Therapy Intensive based on your needs and goals.
Who is not a good candidate for an EMDR Intensive?
If you have a frequent and automatic dissociative response to stress, you might not be a good candidate for an EMDR Intensive. Please make sure you let your therapist know if this applies to you. Discuss any other concerns with your therapist so that you feel comfortable and confident about your decision to schedule an EMDR Intensive.
What Should I expect before the EMDR Intensive?
After the initial 45-minute consultation call and after you have completed the necessary paperwork, your therapist will curate specific pre-work for you to complete prior to your intensive. The pre-work is designed to build resources and insight to help you achieve your goals during the intensive. With your permission, your therapist will contact your current/past therapists and/or your psychiatrist to help design an intensive that will allow you effectively and efficiently meet to your goals.
What can I expect in an EMDR Intensive?
While each EMDR intensive will vary depending on the needs of the client, a general flow will go as follows. You will meet for approximately 6 hours per day, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, with an hour for lunch. The first part of Day 1 will focus on history taking and preparation for processing. Once resources are developed, you and your therapist will begin EMDR processing. This will take the remainder of the day or days that you are in your EMDR intensive. On some occasions, resourcing can take longer, so please know that each EMDR Intensive is customized to meet the specific needs of each client. You can learn more about what to expect in an EMDR intensive in our latest blog.
What can I expect after the EMDR Intensive?
Your therapist will send you a follow-up packet containing the specific resources used in your intensive, along with additional materials to support your ongoing healing journey. Some clients choose to schedule a follow-up single-day intensive as needed or on occassion.
Upon your request, your therapist will contact your current therapist or psychiatrist and provide an update and recommendations for moving forward.
Do you use modalities other than EMDR in your intensives?
While the primary mode of therapy is EMDR during an intensive, we do incorporate other modalities. Examples of other types of therapy include somatic psychotherapy, mindfulness practices, parts or ego state work, and sand tray.
